Appearance: For a komodo dragon, Vaken certainly does not possess any of the intimidating features of his animal. He stands a little over six feet tall, though his body can only be described as “scrawny”, with his weight topping out somewhere around 130 pounds. It's not really his fault. Sometimes he just forgets to eat...but regardless, Vaken is not the kind of man that anyone would find physically intimidating. He has soft facial features, which, while not to the point of androgyny, would lead few people, if any, to describe Vaken as “manly”.
Vaken has short, thin, black hair that is just an inch or two short of his shoulders. It's usually messy or disheveled, as Vaken doesn't do too much with his hair, especially by way of day-to-day maintenance. He certainly doesn't bother to cut it, and parts of it can sometimes be seen hanging in his face.
Perhaps Vaken's most reptilian feature are his eyes, his nails and teeth. Yellow, with an almost unnatural shimmer to them, the only real way to describe them is reptilian. Both his nails and claws, particularly his canine teeth, are longer, sharper, and stronger than any human's would be. As Vaken isn't much of a physical fighter, these only really serve as intimidation, and nothing more.
Last, but maybe most importantly, Vaken's entire torso, particularly his back, is covered in scars. He will hide this as best he can.
Strengths: Vaken is intelligent. Very, very, very, intelligent. He's not the most well-spoken gentleman of all time, which can lead to others underestimating his intelligence, but don't let that fool you. He's particularly smart in areas of culture, geography, and battle tactics, even if he's not much of a fighter himself. He didn't get to be the adviser to the Empress for nothing, after all. Of course, if he needs to, he can lay the charm on quite thick if he thinks he needs to convince you.
Being a Hali Kra, Vaken's got a few magical tricks and talents up his sleeves. He's not particularly talented at magic, and only really has one skill worth noting.
Vaken's primary magical talent is his ability to emotionally manipulate people. When he does this, his eyes take on an unnatural shimmer. For his ability to work, he has to make and maintain eye contact, at least for a few moments. This ability of Vaken's allows him to amplify feelings that are already present in his targets, though he cannot create new feelings. For example, if Vaken were to use his powers on someone who was slightly upset, he could, with enough time and eye contact, reduce them to a crying mess. If someone was in love, he could make them fall head-over-heels, and so on. This power has its drawbacks, in that Vaken must have eye contact for the emotional amplification to work, and that it takes him at least ten seconds of continuous eye contact to get his powers to start working. Once eye contact is broken, what happens to Vaken's target depends on the target. Some remain in their heightened emotional states, while some cool down relatively quickly. It all depends on the person.
Vaken can also turn into a komodo dragon. It doesn't really help most situations.
Weaknesses: Vaken is not particularly physically fit. Years of having a relatively well-off life, on top of a few years of pretty serious alcoholism have made him not in the best shape of his life. He knows this, however, and will generally try to avoid confrontations that can't be resolved with talking, or situations that require a great deal of physical activity.
Vaken's alcoholism relates back to childhood trauma. If the Hali Kra had a word for it, Vaken would be suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. He has a few different triggers that cause him to flashback, though these triggers can be suppressed with alcohol or other drugs. Vaken's been self-medicating for a large portion of his life, and is dependent on alcohol. If he doesn't drink anything for more than twelve hours, he can start to experience restlessness, severe headaches, and become extremely irritable, among other symptoms.
History: Vaken Radmos—a man with so much intelligence and so much promise—should have come from a normal family. He should have risen to power with his family's status and his intelligence. Unfortunately, it seems that fate had other plans in store.
Vaken was born to a woman named Versaki Kalil, sister of the Emperor, Koiss Kalil, and Yasare Radmos, a nobleman of no real accomplishments. He had three younger sisters; Gela, Ketrika and Sakaya. Everything should have worked out fine.
It didn't.
There was always something a little off about Versaki. But the people Vaken's family kept in contact with—and the Hali Kra at large—had no idea what it was. It wasn't a physical ailment that was wrong with her, so, as far as they were concerned, nothing was wrong with her. Even after she had her first child, Vaken, it seemed there was something wrong with her. But things truly didn't take a turn for the worse until the birth of her second child, Gela. Something inside her snapped. Changed. Was different.
All Vaken knew was that he had to protect his sisters.
The scars that Vaken bears from years are something that he has to live with.
Things, however, hit their breaking point, when, one day, in a fit of psychosis and magical power, Vaken's father Yasare, fell down a flight of stairs and died. His mother said it was suicide. Vaken knew otherwise. He knew then that he would have to take matters into his own hands.
Versaki Kalil died in the same way as her partner did, thanks to Vaken's own skills at emotional manipulation. Vaken took his father's last name, and started integrating himself in the life of the court of the Second Empire. When the Emperor, Koiss Kalil, died of illness, and his daughter, Vaken's cousin, Rena Kalil, was placed on the throne, Vaken was shocked to find himself named Adviser to the Empress.
Years and a couple of unhealthy sexual relationships later, Vaken seems to be doing pretty well for himself.
Personality: Vaken, as George Takei would call him, is, a douchebag. He is not a very nice person, and not very concerned with what other people have to think of him. He's smarter than you, knows it, and will be the first person to point it out. He's also got a few other undesirable qualities, such as being a racist, xenophobe, and generally just a nasty person.
However, while Vaken is generally a nasty person, his nastiness is not criminal. He doesn't care for people, but he does not take any particular great joys in watching other people suffer, unless they have wronged him. However, don't mistake Vaken's lack of sadism for genuine interest or caring. He'll be the first one to switch sides to amuse himself or save his own ass.
Vaken has his rare moments of not being a douchebag, though. Usually, when sober, he'll be more introspective and quiet, keeping his thoughts to himself, or at least toning the anger and rage down very low, and generally keep to himself. He's generally more pleasant the more sober he is, at least until withdrawal sets in.
Anything else: Vaken is a Hali Kra, a non-human, magical shapeshifter. As mentioned above, he can turn into a komodo dragon and only a komodo dragon.
Vaken is currently in a sexual relationship with the far-too-young-for-him Morbel Sarita. He is homosexual and gray aromantic.
Vaken comes from a culture where there is no such thing as marriage, so the concepts just confuse him.
