Today was the day, the day Summer would relinquish control over the Season to Autumn. At least that was what everyone on Eden hoped would occur if everything went according to plan. There was always the possibility that the Quartet would not be acting with Eden’s best interest at heart and not give their sibling their turn.
Upon a raised platform were seated Seven beings. These were the Pantheon here to witness the event and to make sure everything went smoothly. The Eighth chair was occupied by the absent Death’s son, Winter.
A large black dragon wheeled out from behind a cloud formation and the gathered crowd held their breath. Ever since Death’s rebellion, they could not help but fear black dragons. However, this one announced his presence with thunder and lightening not with ice and snow.
It was Summer. The crowd exhaled at once in relief.
Summer slowed his descent before he fluttered his wings to land delicately on one of the raised platforms before where the Pantheon and Winter were seated. His claws scratching away at the worn granite. Worn from having to endure the scrape of dragon claws season after season.
Around Summer’s neck rested an amulet crafted by The Precursers themselves. It allowed the wearer full control of their Season until it came time to transfer the power to the next in line.
The crowd then noticed a glittering golden dragon undulating in the sky. This dragon bore no wings yet the people of Eden knew to not question such things. This dragon’s mother, the Lady Air, flew the same way. The winds whipped the golden dragon’s flaxen mane, which ran the length of her body, elegantly.
She landed delicately on the platform next to her brother Summer. Autumn had arrived to receive the Amulet of the Seasons from her sibling. But would the Thunder Dragon relinquish control?
Summer roared to the skies as the Amulet disappeared from around his neck. The Amulet then re-appeared around Autumn’s golden neck. Autumn rose up on her back legs and roared to the skies in turn. The two Seasons then turn toward the Pantheon and Winter before bowing their heads. The humanoid dragons then bow in turn.
Life stands from his chair. “Summer, Son of Fire, we thank you for your cooperation in the passing of the Amulet to your sister, Autumn. The Passage of Seasons is a sacred occurrence that has occurred on Eden since before you inherited your names from them. And we hope it will continue for a long time.”
On this last note, he glanced to Winter out of his peripheral vision before continuing. “Autumn, Daughter of Air, you know your duties with your season. Your sister, Spring, and your brother Summer have maintained the crops and you are to ensure that their hard work will not be in vain. You are also to prepare life on Eden for the hard passages of Winter. This I, and the rest of the Pantheon entrust with you, Autumn.”
Life then looked beyond the black and gold dragons to the gathered crowd. “Hear me, Eden. The passage of Summer into Autumn has been completed. But before you return to your homes, join us for a wonderful feast. There will be music and dancing and plenty of treats. So stick around and enjoy some merrymaking.”
